Where things are in the kitchen

Everything you need is in one of the numbered spots below. Nothing is locked away, and every cabinet is fair game.

Around the range

  1. Pots and pans. Cabinet with two pull-out shelves. Stock pot, saucepans, a big non-stick skillet with a lid, and tongs.
  2. Cutlery drawer. Forks, knives, spoons, steak knives, chopsticks, measuring cups and spoons, and a pizza cutter. The steak knives have wooden handles, so please hand-wash them.
  3. Spice drawer. Two dozen spices, all labelled. Salt, pepper and olive oil stay on the counter to the right of the range.
  4. On the counter, left of the range. Three crocks of cooking utensils: spatulas, ladle, whisk, tongs, potato masher, peeler, grater, wooden spoons and a brush. Next to them is the tea rack and a K-cup carousel.
  5. Range and oven. Gas cooktop, electric convection oven, and a warming drawer underneath. How to use it is on the Stove, oven and dishwasher page.
  6. Glasses. The narrow upper cabinet to the right of the hood: water glasses, wine glasses, champagne flutes and stemless glasses.
  7. Dishwasher. Beside the sink. Also covered on the appliances page.

The microwave tower

  1. Foil, plastic wrap, parchment. Top cabinet, with the microwave splatter cover.
  2. Microwave.
  3. Baking sheets, a plastic cutting board, roasting rack and oven mitts. Drawer directly under the microwave.
  4. Gadgets. Strainers, a hand mixer, an immersion blender, whisks, and a grill press.
  5. Disposable foil pans and a spare oven mitt. Handy for anything messy you would rather not scrub.

Other cabinets

  1. Plates and bowls. Dinner plates, side plates, pasta bowls, cereal bowls, a stack of kids’ plates, bowls and cups, and wooden cutting boards on the top shelf.
  2. Mugs and more glasses. Coffee mugs, pint glasses, small tumblers, another set of wine glasses, and a box of straws.
  3. Storage and prep. Food containers with lids, zip bags in three sizes, mixing bowls, a colander, ramekins and cork trivets.
  4. First aid kit and bandages. Upper cabinet.
  5. Odds and ends. Screwdriver set, batteries, WD-40, appliance manuals, placemats, paper napkins, a power strip and spare shelf liners.
